Acronyms, Jargon and Industry Lingo

Updated: Dec 20, 2022

Career fields often have their own language which makes sense to industry insiders. These can be terms, abbreviations and acronyms used and understood by peers and colleagues, but not so much by the general public. The use of industry jargon can be problematic on a resume. Resumes can pass through Human Resource gatekeepers that may or may not be privy to the terminology. Generally it is best to spell out acronyms and abbreviations when initially used in the resume. This gives the novice reader a frame of reference and helps them understand your skills and qualifications to push the resume on to the next level.

Whenever possible try to skip past the gatekeepers and send the resume straight to the hiring manager. This can take some research effort, but thanks to social media like LinkedIn, it can be done. Delivering you resume straight to the source shows motivation and initiative. Nothing beats having a resume hand delivered to HR from an interested manager.

Your goal is to get a job. Make sure your resume simplifies this task by helping the reader understand your career in clear and concise language. A great resume makes sense to the lay person and the professional.
